This timeline highlights key events in the development of Food Design since the term first emerged and the discipline grew into what it is today, a Design sub-discipline, similar to Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Product Design, etc. This is not a timeline of every instance where Design and innovation have been applied to food throughout human history, because those developments have been part of human evolution: from the control of fire and cooking, to the creation of tools and utensils for opening nuts, to the domestication of plants and animals, fermentation, canning, and more. Even in the previous and current century Design and innovation have been applied to the world of food and eating, both in Gastronomy and Haute Cuisine as well as Product and Industrial Design. This timeline doesn’t cover that, but is instead a comprehensive account of the Food Design discipline since the moment the name was created, and highlights the steps made by academia and independent food designers to establish it.
